Tsukiji Honjoji Temple is a temple of the Honjoji school of Pure Land, and its main mountain is the Honjoji Temple (Nishihonjoji Temple) in Kyoto, and the founder of the mountain is Shinran Sage (1173-1263). The temple was built near Asakusa in 1617. It was destroyed by fire in 1657 and rebuilt at its present site in 1679.
At that time, this land was still a piece of sea water, and under the leadership of the temple believers, the land was reclaimed from the sea to rebuild the temple. It was destroyed by a fire caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, and rebuilt as the present Hondo (Buddhist Hall) by architect Tadata ITO in 1934. In 2014, the "Main Hall", the "gate pillars (main gate, North Gate, South gate)" and the "stone wall" were designated as important national cultural heritage. The name "Tsukiji" contains the meaning of building land, reflecting the origin of this land.
