Long weekend these days the weather is good, the most suitable to go to the snake hole to play, a mention of the snake hole, do not know what kind of scene you will think of? A giant boa constrictor? Bai Suzhen? Old Indian men blowing pipes and snakes swaying to music? There are snake holes in Manu, but they're not what you think, okay?
Time: Late April to mid-May
Activities: Watching wild snakes, finding snake holes, hiking.
Location: Narcisse Snake Dens
Special reminder: Live snakes are not poisonous!
Manitoba special spring to see snakes, spring is coming, everything comes back to life, it is the season of animals... In addition to the winter cold, spring to see snakes out of the hole is also one of the characteristics of Man province. The first year to catch up with masks, parks closed; The next year was abandoned due to weather. It finally happened this year! Snake hole is one of the tourist attractions in the province of Man, living in such boring Winnipeg, it is recommended that you must go to the snake hole to play!
Narcisse Snake Den has the largest gathering of red-sided garter snakes in the world! Visitors can handle non-venomous snakes under the guidance of on-site volunteers and witness the annual mating ceremony of tens of thousands of such snakes, the largest in the world!
The on-site restrooms are primitive. You may need to bring your own food and drinks or go to a nearby town to eat. The water from the on-site pump is not safe to drink due to the lack of shade on the trail! It is recommended to use sunscreen from the appearance until the long weekend in May, on-site staff will be on site seven days a week.
It is recommended that we hurry to play in early May, one and a half hours each way. For free, catching snakes is so much fun. To this side of the feeling is this side of the small animals are more stupid...... Will only spit the son, will not look back to bite you (male snake), do not provoke large and thick female snake, minutes to open your mouth.
Google for you, this snake hole is located about 130 kilometers north of Winnipeg, it takes about an hour and a half to drive north onto Highway 17 to reach! No door tickets, everyone can enter for free. It is one of the most natural places in the world to see snakes. The only time of year you can see the snakes are during the short spring and fall seasons, and they are unique to Canada. Not only do they not bite, but you can pick them up and play with them. However, it is said that if the snake is not happy, it will pee on your hand!
It was sunny in the morning, and the snakes were sunning themselves outside. To be fair, it's kind of gross to see a bunch of snakes in a huddle, but it's cute. When spring comes back, it is actually the season for people to come out and mate, and maybe you can see people having sex. Once thought to be only in the documentary scene, finally saw the boys running after the girl, and finally formed a wriggling mating ball.
By the time summer arrives, they will have dispersed, and there will be no snakes left! But in the fall, they reappear at the snake hole to feed, then prepare to hibernate for the winter in cracks in the rock and the frozen limestone below. So the best season to watch is when the spring is mild and the fall snakes return to their caves!
Narcisse Snake Dens has a total of four easy to visit snake caves, and the trail between the four points is sun-baked and boring.
If you can't bear to drive this far and just watch the snakes make love, there is a lakeside park about 40 kilometers from the snake den, and you can take a break on the way back. See the sign that says "Norris Lake" on the side of the road, turn into the intersection. The beach isn't great, it's small, but sitting and watching the lake add a meal, and the kids are treading water on the swings, and that's a bonus on the weekend.
Snake watching is Winnipeg's last attraction, every May tens of thousands of snakes crawl out of their burrows to mate, with the arrival of summer, these snakes disperse to the feeding grounds, in early September each year these snakes return to their burrows to prepare for hibernation. We came to visit the four snake holes on August 29, when some snakes had already come back early and crawled towards the holes. Den2 saw more snakes, and all of them dared to lift them with their hands except me.
Snakes don't usually become active until mid-morning, so it's best to plan snake viewing between mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Weather also plays a big role in how active snakes are; Warm, sunny days are best in order to see the snake in all its glory. On cold and/or cloudy days, snakes are not very active.
Where: Look for the Narcisse Snake Dens sign on Highway 17, 6 km north of Narcisse (GPS coordinates are latitude 50o44'07.62 "north and longitude 97o31'54.32" west). Turn east at the entrance sign and follow the short circuit to the parking lot. Here you will find directions and interpretable signs, restrooms, picnic areas and a 3 km (1.8 mi) long walking trail. The trail winds through native grasslands and aspen forests, making it easy to walk. Visitors from Winnipeg need about 1.5 hours drive north, which is about 130 km from Winnipeg. We didn't get home until half past nine. The three snake catchers all said it was fun! With this, our trip to Winnipeg came to a successful end! Return tomorrow morning!
Introduced so much snake cave content, everyone moved? It is better to act now!
A friendly reminder:
Food: You need to bring your own drinks and food because there are no supermarkets or restaurants in the Snake Cave area.
What to wear: It is recommended that everyone wear a windbreaker and a hat to prevent cold. Shoes to wear comfortable hiking shoes, after all, is the field, feet must be comfortable!
