Selection: Port Hope Salmon Run Dam
2023 finally had the opportunity to watch Canada's legendary wild salmon fall reflux! It's very shocking!
PortHope is not far from Toronto, about an hour's drive away. At present, you can indeed see a lot of fish gathered under the dam, but the jump is not very frequent, not as spectacular as last year, may not be the best viewing time. Last year it was September 18th.
There are a lot of people in the local fishing, is not fishing, is completely in the hook fish, but I heard that not caught, did not succeed in the return of the salmon are still dead in that stink.
Every year in late September and early October, mature salmon swim upstream from the Pacific Ocean back to the lakes and streams where they were born, in a desperate collective activity that uses up all their fat and energy to breed.
Port Hope has three main spots to watch salmon migration
1, Route 28 entrance, next to Crawford's Lakeside Cafe, where the salmon run begins.
2, the bridgehead of the Ganaraska River. Many Bridges can overlook the salmon migration, you can also go down to see a salmon swimming, accumulating strength uphill, a little thrilling.
3, Corbett "s Dam of the Ganaraska River
High tide and end of migration.
It is recommended to see the most shocking salmon jumping cave near the dam first, if you have the time and strength to walk down the river all the way down, and slowly enjoy the contrast from upstream to downstream different scenery. Because there are no restaurants and cafes near the dam, there is a small outdoor park where you can picnic.
If you want to eat lunch after seeing salmon, it is recommended to eat in the nearby town downstream (parking is free about 5 minutes away from the nearby viaduct). We went to Sentorini Restaurant(Greek style restaurant) which had all kinds of salads, hamburgers, chicken wings, fish and chips and so on. In particular, the children's set meals are very rich, and ice cream is sent for dessert. The staff at the restaurant are very friendly and helpful.
Finally, I would like to say: Salmon mothers are really brave and selfless! In order to allow children to be born in a safer natural environment, upstream, experience the danger of being caught by wild bears/birds/humans, and may hit the dam or the bank reef when jumping up, wondering if the halfway is too tired and washed away by the rushing river, all kinds of traps, no more difficult, but also to survive and reproduce in the survival of the fittest in nature!
Just like us moms! All want to work hard to provide a superior living conditions for children, so that children grow up healthy and happy. When I was young, I also experienced big and small exams, and the college entrance examination.
A mother watching the salmon told her children: "It swam hard to go up and went in, did not go up and was eliminated..." Very memorable!
Although the daughter is muddled, she also knows that the "salmon" mothers are very brave and great, and strive to reach the upper reaches for the baby fish that were not born.
